Jul 18, 2019 – As Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated for the 10th year, Optical Alliance, the Student board of the University of Johannesburg Optometry department and the SAOA hosted a Golf Day in order to give back to underprivileged kids in Johannesburg. By not only spending 67 minutes but a whole day in support of the kids of 3 children’s homes. 98 Kids were screened, the ones who needed were examined by twelve final years UJ Optometry students. The kids had popcorn, McDonalds, Cupcakes, sweets, etc and to get rid of all the energy, a jumping castle.
35 pairs of spectacles will be dispensed to the homes on Friday and Monday. A sixteen-year-old boy who fell through the cracks of screenings for many years, has been accommodated by Dr Christodoulou in Edenvale who only came for a round of golf. This is what made this day so special, one kid’s eyesight could possibly be saved. Roelize from ARC Personnel and Amanda from eOptics took the time to accumulate donations in order to give each child a special gift pack.
